- Bio...
- SKINDEALER was formed in September 2001 in the new city of Gatineau, Quebec, located a few minutes outside of Canada's national capital, Ottawa. The band was originally known as ENDENSA, a space-rock quartet that was formed in 1996, recorded a 4 song EP (over 500 copies sold) and performed over 60 shows in various cities across Quebec and Ontario.ENDENSA temporarily disbanded in early 2001, But Drone and A.L. saw this as a minor glitch and decided this would be the perfect opportunity to fine tune their sound and define their style. Hence SKINDEALER.The name came to Drone one evening when A.L. and himself were debating over what kind of name could capture their dark and cynical personalities, while remaining catchy and appealing. SKINDEALER worked perfectly. The name is also loosely based on Buffalo Bill, a character in The Silence of the Lambs, a film that greatly inspired their music and philosophy.MUSIC:SKINDEALER's music is filled with analogies and sarcasm relating to various themes. Their songs are about dreams, fears, sexual fantasies and interpersonal relationships. The themes and concepts are delivered through a wide range of vocal expressions, combined with driving guitar riffs and heavy electro-acoustic drumbeats. The songs contain a dark and dirty ambience reminiscent of the imagery of movies like Blade Runner, The Silence of the Lambs and Se7en.Although SKINDEALER does not want to be typecast or placed into a mould, it cannot deny its influences, both musically and artistically. Bands like Nirvana, NIN, Ministry and The Prodigy have always been a major part of both Drone and A.L.'s musical heritage. But the members of SKINDEALER have been influenced by many other aspects of the entertainment industry, such as movies (A Clockwork Orange, The Thing), comedians (Richard Prior, Steven Wright) writers (Graham Masterton, Chuck Palahniuk), and of course television (The Simpsons, The Family Guy).Album pre-production and recording is done entirely at SKINDEALER's studios, giving them total creative control and more time to write songs that remain unique to the band's sound.PHILOSOPHY:"The darker and the dirtier, the better" pretty much sums up SKINDEALER's philosophy, regarding music and image. They do not purposely want to shock people, but the name itself has generated some controversy and remains ambiguous to some. This is something that Drone and A.L. try to reinforce through all aspects of their music:"People should be able to formulate their own opinions and ideas about our name, our music and our image. As long as when they're done listening to our songs or watching our live shows, they have experienced as much intensity as we try to put out".
